There is No Excuse for Police Sexual Abuse

Today we speak out against bill that co-opts the issue of police sexual violence and is a threat to the safety of our members. SB43 will literately legalize sexual misconduct against sex workers.

Police sexual violence is structural violence. We must dismantle the systems that facilitate and hide sexual assault and misconduct. The reforms proposed by the Maryland Coalition for Justice and Police Accountability are what all survivors of police violence need.

We send our deepest condolences to coworkers, family and friends of the victims of the shooting. We stand in solidarity with Asian women who were targeted at the intersection of misogyny and racism. Asian women, Black and Brown women, migrants, sex workers, and people perceived as sex workers are made vulnerable to police and non police violence that stems from criminalization.

There is no excuse for police sexual abuse! While activists and advocates are working toward real police accountability a deceiving one-off bill was quietly making its way through the legislative process. The bill claims to expand the law that prohibits police sex, but would literally legalize it for those most at risk, sex workers.

Opinion: Survivor-Focused Approach Needed on Law Enforcement Sexual Misconduct – Maryland Matters
Jada* has survived sexual assault many times, though she’s only ever been treated as a criminal. Since childhood, her struggles with abuse and homelessness led to frequent encounters with the police officers tasked with enforcing drug and prostitution laws. As a Black woman she’s more likely to ...

AMAZING how police consistently make the most “mistakes” when the person they’re dealing with is Black yet they manage to apprehend white mass shooters without killing them time & time again.

Devastated. MD close to legalizing serial #sexualassault by police officers. #Sexworkers always 1st to be thrown under the bus, but this is HATEFUL. The anti-sex worker lobby silenced survivors & legitimize violence against us @PowerInsideBalt #MDGA21 #PoliceReform @baltimoresun

Massage parlor workers say more police aren't the answer to the violence they face. But NYC, SF, and Chicago have increased policing in Asian American neighborhoods. And PDs around Atlanta said they'd target Asian spas and business for more patrols.

Outside my window now. It’s ridiculous that alcohol is legal and cannibis is not. I support HB32 for adult use legalization, with social justice provisions and expungement. https://t.co/C9Rw0wteFv
